Researchers at the University of Ottawa are investigating how changes to the composition and structure of microscopic layers could improve the performance and energy efficiency of electronic devices. By examining how different materials influence the arrangement of these layers, the team hopes to support the development of smaller, more sustainable electronics.

Led by Prof. Benoit Lessard, the research group studied how thin-film transistor layers assemble on different poly(ionic) liquids, materials that combine the durability of traditional polymers with improved electrical conductivity. Using the Canadian Light Source at the University of Saskatchewan, the team found that adjustments to the underlying layer could significantly reduce the power needed to operate wearable devices.

The findings  could support the development of more energy-efficient wearable electronics and smaller, more sustainable electronic devices!
