Researchers at Polytechnique Montréal have developed a self-aligning molecular material for photonic chips that enables light to be processed directly on-chip.
Many advanced optical functions still rely on additional components that increase energy use, generate heat, and add complexity. By using a self-aligning organic molecule deposited as a thin film onto silicon, the team showed these functions can be performed directly on-chip using processes already common in photonics manufacturing.
Their work could help improve the efficiency and scalability of integrated photonics for applications including AI infrastructure, optical communications, and quantum technologies.
