Tunable warmth in novel garments developed by our Partners at UC Irvine

Our partners at UC Irvine have published their warmth-tunable fabric/textile inspired by cephalopods. Gorodetsky’s team utilized their Angstrom Engineering evaporator with variable angle deposition capabilities to create nano-structures that mimic those in marine animals like squid and octopus’, who have “organs called chromatophores, which transition between expanded and contracted states (upon muscle action) to change how the skin transmits and reflects visible light.”

This observed phenomena has been engineered to create clothing that can regulate temperature based on the wearer’s body heat.
